HBsAg is the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus. A positive result usually indicates current infection, but the result alone cannot distinguish newly acquired from long-standing infection.

What should you know?

Interpretation often uses anti-HBs, total anti-HBc, sometimes IgM anti-HBc, liver tests and HBV DNA. A transient result soon after vaccination is one possible exception.

Practical steps

  • Save your report and any previous hepatitis tests.
  • Tell your clinician about pregnancy, liver conditions and immune-suppressing medicines.
  • Discuss confirmation and follow-up with an appropriate specialist.

When to seek professional assessment

Jaundice, significant confusion or bleeding require urgent medical care. Ask about protecting and testing household contacts or partners.

Frequently asked question

Does positive HBsAg mean cirrhosis?

No. Liver health and the phase of infection need separate assessment.

You can book an online appointment with an appropriate professional through MD Uzaktan Doktor. Do not wait for an online appointment when urgent symptoms occur.
